Question

Look, I'm fulfilling my Thanksgiving resolution already!

Is there a software or online tool that allows you to highlight and write notes on online sources? I was thinking about those digital readers and how they now have ones that allow you to highlight text on them, which got me thinking about taking notes as well...

Basically is there something that I can use to read and take notes on the same source digitally?

Bad Blogger!

I have thought about the content of this course MULTIPLE times since the last MILI meeting, but I have not dragged my butt off of the couch to blog about it. I attended the "History Day at Your Library" training this month and I got a refresher course on all of the databases that are available for my students to do research on for their History Day projects. I am planning on collaborating with Donna to teach my students how to use these databases and why the databases are a better place to find… Continue

Proquest/LibraryCard

I have used this for a few years now and it seems to be more user friendly. You use to need a library card to fully access the site. Now the few times I have used it you can take advantage of all it has to offer with no card needed!

Although I am curious how many of you have your students apply for a library card as part of your curriculum? There are so many more things they could do with it.

Making the Invisible Visible

The discussion about "visible" vs "invisible" puts a new twist on "quantity" vs "quality" The invisible web provides both quality and quantity! It does provide an obstacle to access, through log-ins and passwords or circuitous access paths, but it is often worth the effort.
However, is is less nimble and doesn't adjust to the influences of the market that a search engine like Google can do. I have left database searches frustrated, much more so than using Google. I don't think that the indexing… Continue

To Ning or Not to Ning

I think our school is moving in a great direction trying to guide teachers and staff to use Ning as opposed to a binder full of paper.

Some ways we use it are: Meeting notes, meeting agendas, calendars, announcements and basic staff communication.

I have set up one for our 8th grade team, our PDP Group and there is one for our school Mili group.

I will wait for the end of the year to evaluate, but so far a Ning is a great thing that MPS should take a look at for all buildings.

Why yes there is! Check out Diigo. Diigo lets you organize bookmarks, just like Delicious, but it also lets you highlight text and even add a sticky note. Someone I know calls Diigo, "Like Delcious on crack." :) On the Diigo site click the "Take ...

Actually, you don't need a library card from home to access ProQuest either. If you're accessing any of the ELM databases, you don't need a library card to access them unless they are EBSCO databases. For any EBSCO database you do need your libra...

Which is why it's nice to use worksheets like the 21st Century Literacy worksheets I talked about in Month 3. The couple worksheets I have listed under Month 3 in the wiki can help students identify keywords and synonyms for their subject before t...

We've recently had a rash of plagiarism on tests using electronic devices. I was pretty surprised. I feel like I monitor during tests pretty well, but I'm sure the determined-to-cheat student could get past me. Given the internet access on the cel...

I like how the ELM databases are organized on the ELM site (as opposed to how we have to access it through MPS). For example, they have a topic of Arts & Humanities (http://www.elm4you.org/databases/arts.php) which lists "music" under a few other ...

Class went well. We cut and pasted. We used quotation marks and advanced search. Kids were engaged and did well.

I'm guessing you've been using it within the district? MPS got things changed so that we don't need a library card to log in (after that MILI meeting where we were all sharing library cards). Yea! But at home, you'll still need a library card. I ...

Group work for a computer project is an interesting idea. Are you familiar with Designing Groupwork by Eliz. Cohen? It helps to have each student have certain responsibilities so they all get to be part of the process. I'd like to hear how it goes.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the information.
